LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOR STUDENTS

Exist Differently to change the world

Imagine twenty-year olds empowered to envision and usher in a sustainable world in which material and non-material needs are equally important. VOL offers in-person and online workshops for students to provide these skills. These workshops use media, small and large group discussions to create a shared understanding of why and how our world’s emphasis on material needs and neglect of nonmaterial needs is responsible for the multiple crises they’ve inherited. Through these engagements they will develop a shared understanding of how to create ways to solve crises by practicing Visionary Organizing to exist differently.

  • Race Differently: Racial Equity for Students

Students develop tools to understand the ways that systemic racism impacts the world and their experience in it, as well as tools to empower them to create community building practices that facilitate new ways of being that do not reinforce patterns of systemic racism.

  • Gender Differently: Gender Equity for Students

Students develop tools to understand the ways that patriarchy can distort our personalities and facilitate sexism, homophobia, and transphobia, as well as tools for navigating the world in ways that align more with their own identity and inner wisdom than with rigid gender and social norms and expectations.

  • Human Differently: Holistic Leadership development for Students

This workshop generates tools to understand relationships between social and personal transformation. Students investigate oppression and explore the role of cultural and personal transformation in ending systemic oppression through a lens in which race, gender, poverty, environment, and personal experience are interconnected.

  • Connect Differently: An Introduction to Visionary Organizing for Students

Visionary Organizing is an approach to change that equally emphasizes our material and nonmaterial or spiritual needs. In this workshop students will be introduced to Visionary Organizing as a framework for community and social transformation.

  • Problem Solve Differently: Creating Community Based Solutions to social problems

In this introductory workshop students will learn the components of Visionary Organizing by engaging with and discussing media centered on the experiences of Visionary Organizers who have created community-based solutions to address systemic and structural problems.

  • Future Differently: Visionary Organizing to Create the Future

In this workshop, students develop visions for projects that address community based problems to learn the practice of visionary organizing. By tapping into their inner-wisdom and life experience, students identify a campus or community based problem and develop a vision for a project to address it with the resources they have available to them.
